Medical ID Tutorial

You never leave home without your smartphone. That’s why setting up a Medical ID on your device is one of the simplest and most effective ways to help first responders quickly access critical information during an emergency. Whether you have a severe food allergy or another medical condition, a Medical ID can be a lifesaver when seconds count.

Why It Matters

How to Add a Medical ID on iPhone

  1. Open the Health App
    • Tap the white Health app icon with a red heart.
  2. Access Your Profile
    • In the top-right corner (or bottom, depending on iOS version), tap your profile picture or initials.
  3. Select ‘Medical ID’
    • Tap “Medical ID” > “Edit” to begin filling out your details.
  4. Enter Crucial Information
    • Include allergies, medical conditions, blood type, medications, and any notes first responders should see.
  5. Enable ‘Show When Locked’
    • This ensures emergency personnel can view it without unlocking your phone.
  6. Tap ‘Done’
    • Your Medical ID is now set up and ready to help in an emergency.

How to Add a Medical ID on Android

(Exact steps may differ by device and Android version)

  1. Check Your Phone’s Settings
    • Look for “Emergency Information,” “Emergency Medical Info,” or a similar setting in your phone’s menu.
  2. Add Your Details
    • Input your allergies, conditions, medications, and emergency contact numbers.
  3. Enable Lock Screen Access
    • Ensure first responders can see this info without needing your passcode. Some devices have a toggle or checkbox for “Show on Lock Screen.”
  4. Save and Confirm
    • Exit settings and check your lock screen to confirm that your Medical ID info is accessible in an emergency.

How to Access Someone Else’s Medical ID

If you see urgent medical details like a severe food allergy, alert emergency services immediately and, if needed, administer epinephrine.

Keep It Current

As life changes, so should your Medical ID. Update it whenever you start a new medication, develop a new condition, or change emergency contacts. Keeping accurate, up-to-date information could be the key to receiving the right help when it’s needed most.
